Lois Hill
In the quiet cornfields of Rochelle, Illinois, Lois Hill dreamt of distant lands and ancient arts. Her heart was set on exploring the world, and she found herself drawn to the vibrant culture of Bali, Indonesia. The contrast was stark - from the golden fields of Rochelle to the lush rice paddies of Bali. But for Lois, it felt like destiny.
Fresh out of Rollins College in Florida with a degree in communications, Lois's wanderlust led her to Jakarta. She began her journey as a fitness instructor at a local hotel, a humble start to what would become an international venture. Amidst the hustle and bustle of Jakarta, Lois was captivated by the intricate work of local artisans. She saw in their craft a history and artistry that had faded in the western world.
Lois wasn't content with just admiring these arts; she wanted to revive them. She meticulously learned and adapted these ancient techniques: the “figure 8 weave” from India, “filigree” from Scandinavia, “single wire weave” picked up from a Turkish belt, and the textile weave from Thailand; creating jewelry that told tales of her travels and the rich histories of the places she'd been. Her pieces, handwoven with precision, found their way to the shelves of prestigious retailers like Macy’s, Nordstrom, and Jared.
In 2019, recognizing the global appeal of her designs, Lois partnered with New York City–based Unique Designs. This collaboration ensured that her artistry reached every corner of the world, all the while preserving the authenticity of her techniques.
Lois Hill's journey from Rochelle to Bali is not just about jewelry design. It's a tale of a woman who became a bridge between ancient art forms and modern aesthetics. Each piece she crafts offers its wearer a slice of history, a story, and a testament to what happens when passion meets craftsmanship.
